Horizontal boring machines are major time-savers for a lot of different jobs. Don't believe that? Just ask an experienced cabinet or furniture-maker.
Use it for doweling - and lots more ! The most obvious application for this machine is doweling. Imagine being able to lay your drill press on its side, tilt its table 90o and drill dowel holes in the edges of your workpieces while their broad, flat surfaces are fully supported on the surface of the machine's table. The Shopsmith Horizontal Boring Machine allows you to do exactly that! Just align the MARK V's table so it's parallel to the drill bit…move it up or down to position your holes near the centerline* of your workpiece edges...set the depth for your holes and go to work.
Your MARK V's table system ensures the accuracy of your results. . Its full tilting action and rack-and-pinion height
adjustment make precise alignments quick and easy. Add the standard extension tables and you have a huge working surface
that will easily support the longest boards. Use the MARK V's adjustable quill feed depth-of-cut dial and lock to quickly read and set your hole depths (up to 4-1/4 inches) with amazing precision.

The variable speed drive lets you match the MARK V's speed
(700 to 5,200 rpm) to the bit size and the wood species being
drilled for smoother holes with less burning.

Center drilling can also be performed on the MARK V…but not on any other boring machine that we know of. The workpiece (usually a turned object) is attached to a lathe faceplate and mounted to the MARK V's drive spindle. The drill chuck (holding the appropriate bit) is fixed to a special chuck arbor, held rigidly in position in the lathe tailstock.

The MARK V is turned on and the workpiece is rotated and advanced using the quill feed lever while the bit remains stationary. Since center-to-center alignment is much easier to establish with this set-up than with a conventional vertical drill press, it is the recommended method for drilling deep or long holes.
* Here's a tip: If you always keep the same (top or bottom) surface of all boards against the table's surface when using the horizontal boring machine, all holes will be in top-to-bottom alignment, even though they may not be in the exact center of the boards.
